2018 New Year’s Resolutions

Here I am, halfway through January talking about “New Year’s Resolutions.” All month, I’ve been wanting to write this post, but I’ve just been putting it off… kind of the same way I’ve been treating some of my resolutions. So, here I am, putting my resolutions on the internet for the world (or my friends) to see! Let’s go.

  1. Work on my relationship with God 
    • I’ve had what my pastor would describe as a “lukewarm” relationship with God for the past 3-4 years. Sometimes I go to church, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I read my bible, sometimes I go months without even looking at it. I call myself a Christian, but many people who interact with me on a daily basis would have no idea. I’m always too wrapped up in the secular world because it seems easier than devoting my life to Christ.
    • Where to start?
      • Serving a church instead of occasionally attending
      • Listening to God
        • All my life, I’ve been doing whatever it is I wanted to do when I wanted to do it. Whether that’s choosing a college, choosing an apartment complex, changing my major, relationships, what to eat, what to wear, where to move…etc. It’s so easy to forget that God is there for us and wants to guide us through all of our decisions. What I have planned for myself is minuscule compared to the elaborate destiny He planned for me in my mother’s womb. All I have to do is take the time to listen.
        • I’m not saying this as if it’s easy. I’ve been trying (on and off) to listen to God for years. His voice is a whisper amongst the chaos.
        • I know that I can get there, it’s just a matter of time. I’ll let you know when I figure it out.
      • Spending more time with God
        • An author I love, Heather Lindsey, talks about the importance of listening to God, and we can’t distinguish his voice from others if we don’t know Him.
        • So, I’m starting every day with a devotional. I bought a journaling devotional to read every morning. I love it because there’s a short (1-2 page) passage to read then 3-4 questions to answer after the passage and a place to write your prayer for that day.
        • Less TV
          • I love my shows. Scandal, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Greys Anatomy, The Bachelor, The Challenge… the list goes on. When it’s all said and done, Olivia Pope is not going to deliver me from my sins. I can spend those hours doing any of the things on this list.
  2. Live a healthier lifestyle 
    • Since graduating from college a little over a year ago, I’ve put on some weight. I was so active as a student. I took fitness courses, I had to walk everywhere, I meal prepped to save money…etc. Even though it didn’t feel like it then, I was very active. Now, I spend 8+ hours of my day in an office and go to Chick-Fil-A more than I’d like to admit. Here’s exactly what I’d like to change:
      • Meal prep every week 
      • When I do eat fast food, choose a healthier option 
        • Ya know, like 1 BBQ sauce instead of 3 at Chick-Fil-A
        • Choosing turkey chili soup instead of broccoli cheddar at Panera
        • Opting for water instead of lemonade or soda
      • Workout 3x at least a week 
      • Eat less processed food and more fruits and veggies 
      • Drink more water
        • This will probably be my biggest challenge. I LOVE propel. I’ve lived off of Propel for the last 5-6 years of my life. Turns out, it’s not healthy. Who knew?
        • This is something I committed to at the end of 2017, but want to continue throughout 2018. So far, I’ve been extremely dehydrated. Pray for me.
      • Eat breakfast every day 
        • I need to kick off my metabolism every morning with a hearty breakfast.
        • I used to love breakfast. All throughout college, I would wake up early to cook myself breakfast (oatmeal and sausage). I’m not entirely sure what happened, but that just stopped in 2017.
        • So far, I’ve been eating breakfast sausage, whole wheat/whole grain bread, and a delicious smoothie. It’s been incredible.
  3. Read at least 1 book per month 
    • I’m really excited about this! When I started college, my whole life revolved around studying and reading textbooks. I lost all desire to read for my own enjoyment.
    • My list so far:
      • Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife by Dr. Eben Alexander
      • The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
      • The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
      • The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman
      • The Approval Fix by Joyce Meyer
      • Jesus Feminist by Sarah Bessey
      • Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend

 

Anddddd that’s all folks. There are my 2018 New Year’s Resolutions. Hopefully, this post (and you all) will hold me accountable for the next 11.5 months <333
